Mildred Agnes Dick

The Funeral Mass for Mildred A. Dick will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 14th, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, West Albany in rural Millville, MN with Father Richard J. Dernek officiating. Burial will be in the Church cemetery.

Mrs. Dick, 89, of Wabasha, MN and formerly of Millville, MN died Tuesday morning, April 10, 2012 at her home in Wabasha, MN.

Mildred Agnes Sexton was born to Edmund and Agnes (Laqua) Sexton on April 3, 1923 in Millville, Oakwood Township in Wabasha County, MN. She attended her first 8 grades of school in District 24 Millville, and then went to High School for 2 years at McCahill High School in Lake City, MN and 2 years at Plainview High School in Plainview, MN where she graduated in 1941. After High School she worked at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN and also at St. Joseph’s Hospital in St. Paul, MN. She then went into Nurses training at the Vocational School in Minneapolis, MN, after graduating she worked at St. Mary’s Hospital in Superior, WI.

On October 10, 1945 she married John Clemens Dick at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in West Albany. After marriage they lived in Brownwood, TX while John was in the Army, and Mildred worked in a hospital in Texas.

After John was out of the service they moved back to Minnesota, and lived in Wilford Norton’s farm house until March 1947. They then moved to George White’s farm and rented it for 7 years, while living on that farm 5 of their 7 children were born, Mary, Peter, Jerry, Dale and Rita. In 1954 they bought a farm in Millville known as the “Hayes Farm”, Doris and Randy were born while living there.

Mildred was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and Ladies group, and also a member and Past President of the Millville Valley American Legion Auxiliary.

After retiring from farming in 1980 they moved to Baudette, MN. There Mildred was a member of the Sacred Heart Church in Baudette. She served as President of the Home Extension Homemakers Hackette Club, and volunteered at the Baudette Nursing Home with the Bingo game for 15 years, and was also a member of the Lake of the Woods Hospital Auxiliary in Baudette. She volunteered at Christmas time to make Christmas stockings for the newborn babies that were born in December, and the New Year babies. In 1999 they moved to Wabasha, MN due to John’s health.

Mildred enjoyed crafts, making quilts and helping others with sewing projects, and she loved to fish. She also was devoted to taking care of her husband John after he had 2 strokes, a leg amputation, and Diabetes for a number of years. She also was devoted to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, always ready to lend a helping hand. Mildred had a big goal in life to make all of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren a quilt and she did that for Christmas in 2001.

Mildred is survived by her 7 children, Mary (Robert) Press of Pinckney, MI, Peter (Janet) Dick of Windsor, CO, Jerry (Patty) Dick of Millville, MN, Dale (Jeanne) Dick of Hosmer, SD, Rita (Mark) Schmitt of Rogers, MN, Doris Grovdahl of Rochester, MN, and Randy (Jane) Dick of St. Charles, MN; 24 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Robert Sexton of Millville, MN, Irene Tritchler of Minneapolis, MN, Lawrence Sexton of Millville, MN, Delores Books of Ellsworth, WI, and Rita Marcella (Tony) Wallerich of Lake City, MN; sister-in-law, Lucy Sexton of Lake City, MN; brother-in-law, Donald (Sharon) Dick of Wabasha, MN. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband John died January 8, 2005, sisters, Frances and Rose, and brothers, Patrick and Richard, sister-in-laws, Mary Sexton, Margaret Sexton, Dorothy Sexton, brother-in-laws, Walter Books, John Tritchler, Thomas Schmidt, and Ferdinand Franke.

Friends and family may visit from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 13th, at Schleicher Funeral Homes, Plainview Chapel in Plainview, MN and from 9 a.m. until the time of service at the Church on Saturday. A Rosary will be at 3:45 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
