Earl "Bud" Wayne Ponto's Obituary
The memorial service for Earl "Bud" Ponto will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 8, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Elgin with Pastor Terrill Bramstedt officiating. Friends and family may visit from 10:00 a.m. on Friday until the time of service at the church. Burial will be in the Elgin Cemetery with Military Rites by the Eyota American Legion Post #551.
Mr. Ponto, 78, of Eyota, passed away on Friday, April 1, 2016 at Mayo Clinic Hospital – Rochester, Saint Marys Campus.
Earl Wayne Ponto was born September 7, 1937 to Emery and Martha (Halpaus) Ponto on the family farm north of Elgin. He attended school at Elgin and went on to the trade school in Austin. Bud served his country in the US Army for two years in the 2nd Armed Division in Fort Hood, Texas. In October 1963 he married Judith Dalton at Trinity Lutheran Church in Rochester.
Bud was employed by Himec in Rochester for all of his working career. They lived in Rochester until 1972 when they moved to their farm near Eyota, while he continued to work at Himec he also farmed.
Bud enjoyed going hunting and fishing, tinkering and fixing everything. He loved to spend time gardening and donated a lot of his garden produce to the local food bank, Channel One. He also loved to spend time with his grandchildren. Bud was a member of Local 10 Sheet Metal Union, and Eyota American Legion Post #551.
Bud is survived by his wife Judith Ponto of Eyota; 2 sons, Mark (Tina) Ponto of Eyota, and Anthony (Brenda) Ponto of Waverly, IA; 2 daughters, Jill (Darrin) Hinrichs of Phoenix, AZ, and Jenna (Jerry) Lundin of Zumbrota, MN; 6 grandchildren; 2 brothers, Ervin (Shirley) Ponto of Elgin and Jerald (Renee) Ponto of Wyoming, MN; 6 sisters, Dorothy Senst of Wabasha, Lougine (Roland) Barrett of Cherokee Village, AR, Barbara (Richard) Zimny, Rochester, Jeraldine (James) Gustavson, Whalen, MN, Sharon (Wes) Glasenapp, Rochester, and Joyce Richmond of Eyota. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Family prefers memorials to be sent to: "American Legion Foundation Fund 86", and may be mailed to: The American Legion, 20 West 12th Street, Room 300A, St. Paul, MN 55155. These funds will be used for Trolling for Troops (fishing), Turkey Hunt, and Deer Hunt for disabled veterans.
