Eleanor Jane Gerken's Obituary
The funeral service for Eleanor Gerken will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 18, at Trinity Lutheran Church – Lincoln, 35973 Cty. Rd 17, rural Lake City with Pastor Dan Reich officiating. Burial will follow in the Lincoln Trinity Lutheran Cemetery.
Mrs. Gerken, 85, of Zumbro Falls, passed away Saturday evening, June 13, 2015 at Mayo Clinic Health System – Lake City Care Center in Lake City.
Eleanor Jane Betcher was born December 31, 1929 in Lake City to Edward and Olive (Revling) Betcher. She was baptized at St. John's Lutheran Church on January 10, 1930 in Lake City. Eleanor attended country school for 2 years and then moved with her family to Lake City where she continued her schooling at Washington School for 4 years and then attended St. John's Lutheran School. She was confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church on May 23, 1943. Eleanor graduated from Lincoln High School in 1947, while in high school she worked part time at a grocery and dry goods store.
Eleanor married Richard Gerken on December 16, 1949 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Lake City. They made their home on a farm in the Zumbro Falls area, where they farmed for 25 years, and raised their four daughters. Eleanor was also employed by DiAcro-Houdaille Company in Lake City for 2 ½ years, and later worked at Land O'Lakes – Oak Center for 15 years.
Eleanor was very creative and enjoyed spending time crocheting, sewing, doing alterations, and canning her garden produce for her family. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church –Lincoln in rural Lake City.
Eleanor is survived by her husband, Richard Gerken of Zumbro Falls; four daughters, Joyce (Sid) Blanchard of Mound, Bonnie (Pat) Ritter of Loretto, Nancy (Terry) Steffenhagen of Lake City, and Robin Prince (Joey Goss) of Clearfield, PA; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Bernice Dahling and Lois (Richard) Meincke both of Lake City. She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers, and 1 sister.
Friends and family may visit from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17, at Schleicher Funeral Homes, Lake City Chapel in Lake City and one hour prior to the service at the Church on Thursday.
Memorials are preferred to Trinity Lutheran Church - Lincoln.
