The funeral service for Ervin Tiedemann will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 23, 2019 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church – West Albany, in rural Millville, with Father John Wilmot officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery – West Albany in rural Millville.
Ervin Elmer Tiedemann, 97, of Rochester, passed away Monday evening, February 18, 2019 at his home at Madonna Meadows in Rochester. He was born May 5, 1921 to Charles and Esther (Westendorf) Tiedemann, in Gilford Township, Wabasha County. At 5 months of age the family moved to Hyde Park Township in Wabasha County. Ervin grew up there and attended Hyde Park country school, and graduated from the 8 th grade.
Ervin started to work out for area farmers at the age of 18. In October 1939 he joined the CCC Camp and was stationed at Ely, MN for 6 months. He then worked with a carpenter and different farmers until joining the US Navy in September 1943 and was honorably discharged in February 1946. After his service he came home and worked at Mayo Clinic for a while, and then went to farming. On October 23, 1949 he married Margaret Thornton at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in West Albany.
Ervin and Margaret lived on three different farms until 1950 when they moved to Farmington Township, Olmsted County and started to farm there. In 1975 his son Harold joined him in farming. In June of 1983 Margaret passed away and Ervin continued to farm until he retired in 1986, and he continued to live on the farm and helped his son until he was 85 years old. Then Harold took over the farm operations until his death in September 2010.
Ervin was a lifetime member of Post 1802 VFW and the American Legion. He was a member of Pax Christi Catholic Church in Rochester.
Ervin is survived by his sister, Luella Gander of Rochester; daughter-in-law, Pat Tiedemann of Deer River, MN; grandson, Robert (Jamie) Tiedemann of Zumbro Falls, several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son, 2 brothers, and one sister. Ervin is very thankful for his nephew, Bob Ganders, who saw to his needs.
Friends and family may visit from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday at the church.
Memorials are preferred to Zumbro Falls VFW, Madonna Meadows in Rochester, or Mayo Hospice.
