Franklin Leroy Olson Jr., age 55, of Plainview, MN died Saturday, October 3, 2015 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN after suffering a brain aneurysm. In keeping with Frank's loving and generous spirit, it was his decision to donate life so that others may live.
Frank was born to Franklin Sr. and Mary (McGrath) Olson in Wabasha, MN and grew up in Millville, MN. He attended Millville Elementary School and Elgin-Millville High School. After graduating from Elgin-Millville High School in 1977, he moved to Winona, MN and attended Winona Vo-Tech where he received a degree in small engine repair. In November of 1981, Frank married Sara Burgdorf, and they lived their married life in Plainview, MN.
Frank was dedicated to his work…"work before play." He started working at Millville Oil Company, the family business, at an early age. He also worked at Alexander Auto Electric in Rochester, MN, and Kuehn Motor Company in Lake City, MN. His drive as an entrepreneur led him to own Plainview NAPA, St. Charles NAPA, Chatfield NAPA, Plainview Powersports, and Plainview Motors (partnered with Tony Montgomery). He was currently employed as Sales Manager at Kuehn Motor Company in Rochester.
Frank was a sports lover, both watching and participating. He was looking forward to playing his 40th year of Friday Night Softball this summer, and he was also a member of a Tuesday night volleyball team which is fondly referred to as the Winner's Club.
Music always played a big part in Frank's life, and he learned to play many instruments over the years including the piano, the banjo, and his favorite, the guitar.
Frank enjoyed road trips with Sara and Jo Jo, "exercising" with his granddaughter, "Lyvie Jo", talking "smart" with his nieces and nephews at family gatherings, and eating animal crackers and peanut-butter filled pretzels with the "best dog ever," Roxy.
Frank is survived by his wife, Sara; daughter and granddaughter, Andrea and Alyvia of Rochester; son, Jay of Phoenix, Arizona; companion, Roxy Rose; parents, Franklin Sr. and Mary of Plainview; brothers, David (Doris) Olson and Donald (Kathy) Olson both of Plainview; sisters, Jean (Bob) Lyons of Plainview, Darlene (Steve) Richardson of Rochester, and Nancy (Bob) Gessner of Hastings; father and mother-in-law, Lester and Marian Burgdorf of Plainview; brothers-in-law, Michael (Patricia) Burgdorf and Scott Burgdorf both of Plainview; sister-in-law, Mary Jo Burgdorf of Eden Prairie; 12 nieces and nephews; and 16 great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Ronald.
The family requests that donations in Frank's memory be directed to Life Source at 2225 West River Road North, Minneapolis, MN 55411, Plainview Community Theater, Plainview Pool, or an organization of your choice.
A Celebration of Life is planned for Thursday, October 8, 2015 from 3-9pm at the Plainview American Legion Club Room. The family would like to see visitors' connections to Frank in person, so please wear your softball jersey, volleyball shirt, or other attire you have that connects you to Frank or his family.
Be sure to hug those you love…because you can :)
