Janice "Jan" Lee Fiskum, 84, of Plainview, passed away at her home in Plainview on Saturday morning, March 27, 2021. She was born February 17, 1937 in Park Rapids, MN to Theron and Rubie (Crosby) Johnson. She graduated from Walker High School in 1955. While in elementary and high school she was active in the Girl Scouts and accomplished the Curve Bar. She went on to attend Bemidji State and graduated in 1959 receiving her Bachelor of Science Degree in Vocal and Instrumental Music. While at Bemidji she was an accompanist for Carl Thompson, Choral Director at Bemidji State University, and was also a member of the Bemidji Belles Barbershop Quartet from 1956 – 1959. Jan also received the Bender Norden Award for Outstanding Band Women at Bemidji State College in 1958 -1959. She also served as an accompanist for weddings in the state, since she was 13 years old. On August 5, 1961 she married Donald Fiskum in Hastings, MN.
Jan's love for music brought her to a career of 35 years of teaching vocal music in Grand Rapids, Bertha-Hewitt, and Plainview Schools. While in Grand Rapids she also was an accompanist for the Blandin Male Chorus. She also taught piano lessons in Dorset, Grand Rapids, Warroad, and Bertha. In 1967 the Fiskum's moved to Plainview where Jan also taught students and adults voice lessons, and was the director for choirs, solos/ensembles which repeatedly received Superior Ratings at Sub-District and Regional-State Music Contests. She also served as a judge for Sub-Sections Music Contest. Jan was the founder and director of the Plainview Community Choir from 1996 – 2017. She also was the music director for the Plainview Community Theatre for 17 years. Jan was a keyboardist in the Rochester Big Band, and Clarinetist in the Rochester Community Band.
Jan was a member of the Plainview Education Association, Minnesota Education Association, National Education Association, America Choral Directors Association, Minnesota Music Education Association, Retired Members Chairperson for the MMEA Board for 10 years and was in Who's Who Among Americas Teachers in 1995, 1996, and 1998. She was a Charter Member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Plainview and served as the organist/pianist for many years.
Jan is survived by her loving husband of 59+ years, Donald Fiskum of Plainview; their children, Scott (Jo Ellen) Fiskum of Cathedral City, CA, Steven (Kristine) Fiskum and their children, Elise and Skylar of Spring Grove, IL, Stephanie (Jon) Fiskum Bondra of Marblehead, OH; and a sister Jareen Doffing of Hastings, MN. She was preceded in death by her parents, and brother Jay Johnson.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 6, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Plainview with Pastor Krista Henning-Ferkin officiating. Burial will follow the service in Greenwood Cemetery in Plainview. A visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 6, at the church. Masks and social distancing are required.
