The memorial service for Judith "Judy" Schacht will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 21, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 869 7th Avenue SE in Rochester with Dr. James W. Heining officiating.

Mrs. Schacht, 74, of rural Hammond, passed away at her home on Tuesday morning, December 15, 2015; after a long battle with Alzheimer's and Dementia. Her caregiver during this time was her husband Al.

Judith Hannah Vig was born October 24, 1941 in Friend, Neb. during WWII, to Arndt "Bill" and Lucille (Hanson) Vig. She moved with her family to Albert Lea, MN where she was raised. Judy attended school in Albert Lea where she was scholar and very active in school activities, graduating from Albert Lea High School in 1960. Judy went on to Fairview School of Nursing in Minneapolis and graduated in 1963 as a Registered Nurse. She married Allen J. Schacht on September 21, 1963 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Albert Lea.

In 1963 they moved to Montana where Judy was employed as head nurse at Dillon Mt. Hospital. They moved back to Minnesota and Judy was a nurse at St. Anthony Nursing Home in St. Anthony Village. After the Schacht's moved to Pennsylvania Judy was a school nurse in Garnett Valley.

Judy became a master re-upholster while living in Pennsylvania and in Minnesota, winning many national awards. She was an avid flower gardener, avid reader and musician especially the piano. Judy was a very compassionate person, always willing to help fellow human beings.

Judy was very active in the US Forest Service Wives Organizations throughout the nation, serving on various committees and was also very religious. Her grandfather founded the Danish Lutheran Church in America, and founded Dana College in Blair, Neb. Many of the family members were closely associated with Dana College. She was very active at her churches also. Judy was a Stephan Ministers, Chairman of her church in Northern Virginia. Currently Judy was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Rochester, and loved church work and helping people.

Judy is survived by her husband, Allen Schacht of Hammond; three sons, Colonel Eric Schacht of St. Augustine, FL, Steven (Jennifer) Schacht of Lander, WY, and Daniel (Michelle) Schacht of Brentwood, TN; five grandchildren, Megan, Brian, Aidan, Zachary, and Jacob; and one great-grandchild, Emmalyn; two sisters, Mary (Jim) Karlberg of Long Island, NY and Margaret Guildner of Albert Lea, MN. She was preceded in death by her parents, and one grandson, Justin.

Friends and family may visit from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 20, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Rochester and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Memorial preferred to Redeemer Lutheran Church.
