Marie Katherine Goede, age 78, of Plainview, MN passed away peacefully surrounded by family on September 23, 2024, at Mayo Clinic – Rochester, Saint Marys Campus.
She was born October 15, 1945, in Plainview, MN to Edward and Ella (Arends) Lee. Marie grew up in Plainview and attended Plainview Community Schools, graduating in 1963. She went on to attend Winona Secretarial School.
On October 31, 1970, Marie married the love of her life, William Goede. Together they had three children: Darcy, Brett, and Tara.
In 1978, she started her career at Plainview Community Schools as the high school principal's secretary. She enjoyed the students most in her career at Plainview Community Schools and continued to enjoy visiting with them or telling stories even after her retirement.
Marie was highly active as a 50+ year member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 179. She held many positions in the Auxiliary at the Unit, District, Department, and National levels, including being President of the Unit, District and Department. Marie was also fond of the Girls State program, and during her tenure of working with this program, she held the positions of Girls State Chair and Girls State Director. Marie was a proud and patriotic supporter of Veteran programs.
Marie enjoyed traveling with her husband to many National Legion Conventions around the country, with her favorite location being Hawaii.
Marie was a member of St. Joachim Catholic Church, Plainview Scholarship Committee, and was a charter member of the Plainview Athletic Hall of Fame Committee.
Marie's passion was her family – especially watching her grandson Jamison play basketball. She loved cardinals and the color purple. She also enjoyed camping, watching sports, knitting, reading, baking, recipes and collecting cookbooks.
Marie is survived by her daughter, Darcy of Robbinsdale, MN; grandson Jamison, now residing in Toronto, Ontario Canada; son, Brett (Kent Larsen) of Greenville, WI; and daughter, Tara, of Plainview, MN. Marie is also survived by sister, Rose Ellen Lee of Sheboygan Falls, WI; brother, Bob (Lisa) Lee of Chippewa Falls, WI; sisters-in-law, Jean Henke of Chatfield, MN, and Julie (Joel) Eggenberger of Lake City, MN; 23 nieces and nephews and many great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband William, her parents, Edward and Ella Lee; sisters, JoAnn (Lee) Beno, Carol (Lee) Judge, Peg (Lee) O'Neil, and Carmena (Lee) Melvin; brothers, Martin Lee and Morgan Lee; in-laws, Bruno and Ruth Goede; brother-in-law, Kenneth Henke; many aunts and uncles; one niece and two nephews.
Visitation will be held Sunday, September 29, 2024, from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Schleicher Funeral Homes in Plainview, and one hour prior to the funeral service at St. Joachim Catholic Church on Monday. Funeral service will be held Monday, September 30, 2024, at 11:00 AM at St. Joachim Catholic Church in Plainview with Fr. Tojy Jose officiating. A luncheon will follow the funeral service at the Plainview American Legion. Interment will be held at a later date.
Marie's family would like to thank the personnel of both Green Prairie Rehabilitation Center and Mayo Clinic for the compassionate and excellent care they gave Marie.
