Obituary

The funeral service for Richard "Dick" Gjerdingen will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 24th, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Plainview, with Pastor Scott Hirssig officiating. Burial will be in the Elgin Cemetery in Elgin.

Mr. Gjerdingen, 74, of Plainview and formerly of Elgin, died Thursday, February 20, 2014 at St. Isidore Health Center of Greenwood Prairie in Plainview.

Richard Duane Gjerdingen was born June 9, 1939 in Spring Grove, to Bernard and Odella (Ostern) Gjerdingen. He attended school in Elgin graduating from Elgin High School in 1957, and then went to Rochester Vo-Tech. On February 12, 1983 he married Mary Ellen Larson at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in rural Elgin/Plainview.

Dick was employed by Lakeside Foods in Plainview, Kruse Lumber Company in Rochester, and then worked at IBM in Rochester for 43 years retiring in 1999. He enjoyed going hunting, fishing, playing cards, and vacationing up North.

Dick is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Gjerdingen of Plainview; two step-daughters, Karen (Terry) Bush of Andover, and Carol Schmidt of Lake City; one step-son, Larry Fravert of Austin; 7 step-grandchildren; one sister, Janice (Donald) Behrns of St. Charles; one brother, David (Jane) Gjerdingen of St. Paul; two sister-in-laws, Sylvia (Robert) Timmler of Milwaukee, and Gladys (George) Zuehlke of Loyal, WI; one brother-in-law, Kenneth (Terry) Larsen of Schoefield, WI; many nieces and nephews; and semi-adopted family, Jon and Mary Engen and Aaron and Alisha. He was preceded in death by his parents, and nephew, David Allen Gjerdingen.

Friends and family may visit from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 23rd, at Schleicher Funeral Homes, Plainview Chapel in Plainview and one hour prior to the service at the Church on Monday.
