Obituary

Shirley Ann (Hyland) Hampel, 83, formerly of rural Elgin, Minnesota passed away peacefully surrounded by her children on Friday, March 27, 2026, at the Mayo Clinic Lake City Care Center in Lake City.

She was born April 16, 1942, near Ellendale, Minnesota to Arthur and Henrietta (Nelson) Hyland, Sr. On May 4, 1960, she married the love of her life Edwin Hampel at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Together they raised four children.

Shirley loved life on the farm and enjoyed gardening and raising animals, especially pigs. She and Ed enjoyed music. She enjoyed being a "band wife" in the early years and formed many lifelong friendships along the way. She also enjoyed traveling and going for drives and seeing new places. Shirley enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She was always prepared with a fresh cup of coffee, to sit around the kitchen table and visit. Always ending in a loving "Minnesota" goodbye. She especially enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Shirley worked as a Home Health Aide for Wabasha County until having to retire due to a disability in 1989.

Shirley is survived by her children, Richard (Vicki) Hampel of Mazeppa, LeAnn (Randy) Haack of Winona, Debroah (James) Klavetter of Eyota, and Chrisine (Gene) Ferk of Plainview; nine grandchildren, Mike Klavetter, Chantal LaFee, Slade Hampel, Cheyan Stover, Ginger Hampel, Alicia Austin, Daniel Klavetter, Kaitlyn Fletcher, and Jenna Ferk; twenty-one great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her brothers and sisters, Ardith Hyland, Ilean Nereson, Lucille Leibold, Arthur Hyland, Jr., Gordon Hyland, and Donna Jensen.

The funeral services for Shirley will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 1, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Plainview with Pastor Dean Zemple officiating. The burial will follow the service in Greenwood Cemetery in Plainview. Cake and refreshments will be served at the church following the burial.
